THE EMBASSY COMMUNITY

An ever growing movement of people of all backgrounds travelling from all over Melbourne to a space that welcomes all subcultures that may not be catered for elsewhere.

Whether you have dreadlocks, afro hair or straight hair. The Embassy welcomes you as a valued member of a community that embraces all walks of life.

My mission is to break generational trauma by offering methods, information and tips about afro hair. It is vital for the identity and sense of belonging for people with afro hair to know their history and how their hair can empower them.
My mission means more than a hair cut, it is a safe space where anyone can express themselves and feel confident in their natural hair.

Who Is The Embassy

I was born In London to an English mother and Jamaican father. Most of my memories of England are of living with my mother in Manchester. My mum would take me to afro Caribbean barber shops. I’d get my hair braided and get patterns like shooting stars shaved into the side of my head. This played a massive part in me identifying with my culture and community.
When I moved to Australia at the age of 8, I was excited. However this changed when it came time for a haircut. I remember being turned away from 3 different barber shops because they didn’t know how to cut my hair. When the 4th barber agreed to cutting my hair, there were 3 other barbers observing me. All the barbers clearly had no experience with afro hair.
This made me feel isolated and alienated. That’s when I first realised there was a lack of understanding and support for textured hair in Melbourne. This made me realise how I took for granted the accessibility of the understanding back home. These methods, information and tips aren’t taught in Australia, in any level of the hair industry.
